Your Audio Is Probably Too Quiet. Here Is the Two Minute Fix
Audio is the improvement creators skip because nothing looks wrong. But loudness is measurable, platforms have a delivery standard, and most of the videos we analyze come in under it. The result is a video that sounds smaller than everything around it in the feed. Here is what is happening and how to fix it once.
Why your video sounds quiet even when it seems fine to you
You edit with headphones and your hand on the volume. Viewers watch in a feed where every professional video has been leveled to a standard loudness. When yours arrives quieter, they do not think the audio is quiet, they think the video is worse. It is the same instinct that makes a dim photo feel lower quality than a bright one.
Loudness is measured in LUFS, and short form platforms deliver at around minus 14 LUFS integrated. The typical phone recording we measure lands meaningfully below that.
Normalize, do not just turn it up
Dragging the volume slider up also drags up noise and risks clipping your loudest moments. Normalization is smarter: it measures your whole video and levels it to the target, keeping the dynamics intact. Every serious editor has it built in, usually labeled loudness normalization, with a target you set to minus 14 LUFS.

The rest of the audio checklist
- Record in the quietest room you have, phones amplify background hum more than you hear it.
- Get the microphone close. Distance is the main reason voice recordings need rescuing.
- Keep music well under the voice. If you have to choose, viewers forgive missing music and never forgive a buried voice.
- Listen back once on phone speakers, because that is where most of your audience is.
